I think we should be moving toward using more endonyms. some exonyms are less "egregious" like Italy, but the more extreme ones we should start making maps and teaching with the endonym if possible.

I'd been used to thinking of 'lade' as the present tense of laden. A weary man is laden down with cares, and a bill of lading is a list of whatever stuff you've loaded onto a ship. ...also one of those words I get annoyed when a word game won't let me use them.

it would be extremely dumb to use endonyms everywhere, butchering a country's name might be offensive, where i doubt anyone has really problems with exonyms, maybe except the colonial ones but these are separate. nobody should be expected to learn the name of every country in their native language. and then what about adjectives? imagine you ditch exonyms and use endonyms, how do you call a person from such country? do you use the exonym then, or do you have to learn the language rules of the language the endonym comes from. it would be extremely stupid and impractical to use endonyms

good news: aside from +-=, hardly any other symbol covered in this video actually gets used in math anymore since middle school (speaking from personal experience studying math) for multiplication people really just write operands one after another (like 2pq), and division is written as either fraction, slash or multiplication by the inverse. percent is one of those weird things that nobody ever uses, except maybe those that care about real world applications.

Lade is dead? you sure? i feel like "Laden" is still in use. Seems like they might be related. Also Lay Laid Lade. seems like there's something there, but i could be falling for a classic blunder. EDIT: OK now this is gonna blow your mind, but there's ANOTHER suffix that turns verbs into tools. I'll use it in a sentence "What's this thing do? It keeps shit fresh. Well that's a Fresher. I'm going on break." RIP Mitch Hedberg. Oh. he mentioned it, but he didn't talk about it.

if you consider a "misspronounced" endonym as an exonym, then yes, we should totally keep them (like said by many people), Tom Scott has a video about how "merry christmas" is "Mele Kalikimaka" in Hawai'ian, showing how languages are not always compatible. But be should get rid of others (because of colonialism and the likes as you said). exceptions being the countries that can be translated, like South Africa. in all languages I know of (and I checked a couple more on wikipedia), the name is the same but translated (Afrique du Sud, Suid-Afrika, África do Sul, etc) even in the natives languages like Sotho "Afrika-Borwa".

Bro it’s because “the Gambia (River)” is pretty much the whole country. Notice how the whole skinny squiggly country is kinda shaped like a river valley? And his it’s wedged into the middle of Senegal? Almost like THE economic region surrounding THE Gambia river is its own nation? So when referring to THE Gambia you’re talking about a geographic feature and all of the people that populate it.

These new age "native" names for continents are not only stupid but baseless, just like when some tribes in the Americas tried forcing Abya Yala as a new name for the entire continent when it was barely used by like one tribe in Panama

I like what the invented language of Toki Pona does. Every country, place, name and so on, is the endonym, but it is "Toki Ponised" to fit it's spelling rules. For example, France's endonym is Français, but since Toki Pona has no F or R, it just becomes Kanse instead, or something similar. This kind of tries to get the best of both worlds, because it shouldn't be disrespectful, its easy to pronounce in your native language, and people from around the world should be able to more easily understand the names better.

Continuing on from his point about "what endonym?", if country A were to actually pick a language from among the various ethnic groups of country B, it would signal to country B that country A favors that ethnic group over all of the others, creating a truly horrific diplomatic situation.

Has “turtle island” vibes. I get the idea of a united group of subjugated people against colonial powers, but let’s face it, most groups in the Americas and Africa got to be seperate groups by… being seperate and developing their own culture and worldviews and either peacefully, forcefully or inadvertently differentiating themselves from other groups.

I think we should ditch the problematic ones where requested, and replace them with endonym approximations that are pronounceable and typesettable in the language we're speaking. Like, take "Austria" (not that anyone has a problem with that one, as far as I know). "Österreich" doesn't just start with a letter not in the english alphabet (and an unfamiliar sound). It also ends with a super unpronounceable (for english speakers) sound. So if "austria" were abandoned, ending up with fE "austerike" instead of "österreich" should be expected.

2:51 as a german speaker, it doesn't mean people - in best german lego fashion, it means "german land/country". (I guess you could argue that this is to be read as "land of the german people", but still, the people are implied at best) So "Germany" isn't actually far off, and the question becomes - how did the language get its exonym?
